Frost or Ice Accumulation

Ice buildup inside the freezer compartment may indicate a problem with the defrost system. Automatic defrost systems periodically melt frost to prevent accumulation. If frost begins forming on freezer walls, the defrost heater, timer, or temperature sensor may not be functioning properly.

A blocked defrost drain can also lead to water collecting inside the freezer and eventually freezing. Clearing the drain with warm water often restores proper drainage.

In some cases, frost may appear on the rear wall of the refrigerator section instead of the freezer. This can occur when airflow between compartments becomes restricted. Checking that vents are not blocked by food containers can help maintain proper air circulation.


Unusual Noises, Leaks, or Odors

Refrigerators normally produce a low humming sound from the compressor and occasional clicking when the cooling cycle starts or stops. However, loud buzzing, rattling, or knocking sounds may indicate that the appliance is not level or is touching nearby cabinets or walls.

Water appearing on the floor near the refrigerator may be caused by a blocked drain channel or a full evaporation tray located above the compressor. Cleaning the drain opening and inspecting the tray can often resolve the issue.

Unpleasant odors inside the refrigerator usually result from food spills or items stored for too long. Cleaning interior surfaces with a mild solution of baking soda and warm water can help eliminate lingering smells.


Preventive Maintenance

Regular maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan of a refrigerator. Avoid overcrowding the compartments, as proper airflow is necessary for stable cooling. At the same time, maintaining a moderate amount of stored food helps stabilize internal temperatures.

Hot food should be allowed to cool before being placed in the refrigerator to prevent sudden temperature increases.
